RED LIGHT Therapy

RED LIGHT

I know its all the rage. I'm sure by this point you have heard about about it or seen it. There are places adding this to their med spas and offices. There are trials being published showing its promising contributions to our health. For me, its one thing you can commit to. Cant hurt, only helps. So for this favorite Monday Motivation my advice is to invest in a personal red light panel. I use the Mitro Red light because it has the infrared and and red light therapy in one and you can get 5% off with my coupon. (no benefit to my unless I have some hundreds of you buy one, not in it for that)

After my massive shoulder surgery a couple of years ago and through 9+months of painful PT I started using the red light for all its benefits. Has it helped? I feel great, so maybe that is the best compass. As far as anti-aging, Ill have to continue to see if i stay looking 43 in the next few years ;)

The Proven Benefits of Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy

  • Promotes wound healing and tissue repair
  • Supports collagen production / anti-aging
  • Reduces swelling and inflammation
  • Improves joint health
  • Improves physical performance, muscle recovery and energy levels
  • Increases melatonin / improves sleep

How does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red Light Boosts Cellular Energy Production

The most well studied mechanism of action surrounding red and near infrared light therapy is increased mitochondrial energy production in the cells. Mitochondria are tiny organelles that are the energy power plants of all the cells in our body. Red and near infrared light therapy helps the mitochondria create more of that energy. (Hence our company name, Mito Red Light for MITO-chondria)

The specific photons found in red and near infrared light interact with a photoreceptors within our cells called cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction stimulates the mitochondria in our cells to use oxygen more efficiently, which allows the mitochondria to produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Adenosine triphosphate is a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis. Found in all forms of life, ATP is often referred to as the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer. When our cells have more energy, they simply perform better and the body follows suit!

The Science Behind RLT

The best-studied mechanism of action surrounding red and near-infrared light therapy is the stimulation of mitochondrial energy production in the cells. Mitochondria are tiny organelles (organs within a cell) that produce all of the energy that our cells and our bodies ultimately need.

All molecules and atoms absorb very specific wavelengths of light. The specific molecule within the mitochondria that is thought to absorb red and near-infrared light is a chemical called cytochrome C oxidase. Cytochrome C oxidase plays an absolutely essential role in transferring electrons down an electrochemical gradient in mitochondria called the electron transport chain.

The electron transport chain is what drives the synthesis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is a complex organic molecule that is considered the “currency” of energy in the body.

Red light therapy is ultimately thought to improve the efficiency and speed of the electron transport chain, improving the availability of ATP in the cells and throughout the body. This increased energy is what is thought to provide the many benefits that red light therapy is used for.
